The Accounting Department is part of the Business Office. There are approximately 30 employees in the Business Office and 6 employees in the Accounting Department. A few exciting initiatives we are working on include:
Automation efficiencies between AP and Accounting Helping and strategizing a potential new purchasing department. Assisting on testing and being a collaborator on upgrading UNE ERP system Banner
Position is eligible for a hybrid schedule upon successful completion of a 90 day probationary period.
The Senior Accountant provides accounting and internal control support for the Accounting Manager; prepares reconciliations, account analyses and special reports as necessary; and assists management with the accounting and financial reporting processes and systems to ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, University policies, and federal, state, and other external requirements. Responsibilities
Monitor processes and controls over cash and banking activities. Such banking activities include but are not limited to, daily bank activity processes including on-line deposits, voided checks, positive pay disbursement controls, bank wires, bank lockbox activity, resolve and record credit card charge backs and returned checks. Reconciliation of certain third-party statements (e.g. health centers) related to bank reconciliations; follow-up with third-party and University staff related to reconciliation items. Assist with processing and reconciling controls over student loans. Review and record third party processor's activity reports related to student loan payments, cancellations, and adjustments. Make other general ledger journal entries as requested by the Assistant Controller and Controller. Ensure documentation supporting such entries are maintained and organized. Assist other staff by providing support or instruction over reconciliations/account analyses and documentation requirements. Assist with review of reconciliations/analyses performed by other staff. Provide constructive feedback and suggestions for improving efficiency and controls. Prepare or assist with reconciliations and analyses of general ledger accounts as assigned. Assist with preparation for, and support during, the annual financial statement and compliance audits. Assist with management/maintenance of BANNER general ledger chart of accounts and their related attributes. Assist with monitoring of BANNER posting routines such as payroll, student billings, among others. Participate as one of the finance liaisons to the University community to answer questions, correct errors and resolve accounting related issues in addition to providing financial or other information as requested. Seek opportunities and make recommendations for changes in Office of Accounting workflow and procedures to improve customer service and efficiency. Create various reports using administrative software report writing tools. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Bachelors degree in accounting or other appropriate discipline, plus three to five years of general accounting experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. CPA certification a plus. Accounting experience in not-for-profit environment preferred.
Significant experience with computerized accounting systems, spreadsheets, database systems, report writing and query tools, and word processing. Thorough understanding of accounting systems, and how they integrate to create financial statements. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Professional communication skills, both oral and written. Interaction with various University constituents and departments is expected. Self-motivated and reliable. Experience with BANNER (or similar enterprise resource software systems) a plus.
